Introduction

The 2nd Battalion had been ordered to secure another town called Pariana today — not the same one they captured two weeks prior. Facing them would be the die-hard Fascists of the Italia Infantry Division. These were not political hacks without military experience, but rather seasoned soldiers with nothing left to lose — as the Axis cause crumbled and II Duce fled for Switzerland, teams of anti-fascist partisans diligently hunted down any members of the pro-Mussolini forces.

Conclusion

Knowing their opponents' world was crumbling around them, the Nisei planned and executed their attack with care. The battalion took the Bersaglieri from three sides, denying them the ability to concentrate their firepower on any one attack, and threatening their flanks. After a while the Italians lost heart and withdrew, leaving the Americans to occupy the village.

Scenario GofB030

*Yes, Go for Broke is here! Ok, I played the last scenario just because it had late war Mussolini Italians forces vs. Americans, a rarity in PG scenarios so far, unless you play my homemade one called Gela-The Italian Counter Attack and I think there is another on in Divisione Corazzata called Hell on Wheels. The Go For Broke supplement is very cool and has a lot of Nisei scenarios that are not too large and have a lot of variety; fighting in Italy, Southern France and back to Northern Italy again. It also gives a very nice write up on the Nisei history, plus more.

*My American Nisei forces entered from the west and the south in two groups while the smaller Italian Bersaglieri die hard units tried to hold the town of Pariana. Points for both the town hexes & eliminated steps! The Americans rolled very well in the beginning to set the game tempo. It was very difficult for the Italians to recover, even that Italian GUAS Flamethrower unit rolled poorly in it’s assault chance. The End was a Major American victory, they controlled all the town hexes, eliminated 7 steps of Italian units, with the rest of their units retreating north and at this point only had one demoralized & one disrupted unit of their own.

*Just for the uniqueness of this battle, you have to rank it high!

Scenario GofB030

The Bersaglieri are infinitely tougher than the Blackshirts that the Slovaks needed to deal with in "End Game in Italy" in the First Axis supplement. This should not, however, be taken to mean that they were somehow tough in comparison to the Nisei. They died quickly, although mostly to real casualties and not double demoralization.

The Americans advanced from the east and quickly enveloped the Italian front in Pariana. The goal was to get into assault with a leader present as the superior firepower of the American troops in combination with the morale differential would make for quick work.

This was all over in 8 turns as the Nisei assaulted the Itlians in Pariana after experiencing some losses from Opportunity Fire on the approach. The assaults were appropriately deadly and the only real problem was the inability of the leaders to maintain their morale and the morale of the Nisei. This was obviously a late war effect as everyone had to know that in April, 1945 the war in Italy was over. The final scenario score was 23-3.

The real attraction of the scenario is not the play itself but rather the combination of the Nisei and the Italian troops and the chance to see such a highly unlikely pairing on the board at the same time. The scenario itself plays like a "2" but the novelty earns it a "3".
