Introduction

On the right flank of the German Third Army striking southward out of East Prussia, the German 1st Cavalry Brigade attacked the Polish Mazowiecka Cavalry Brigade along the Ulatkowka River. The September Campaign is best remembered today as the birthplace of blitzkrieg, but a large-scale clash of cavalry was among its very first battles.

Conclusion

A few mounted clashes actually occurred on this front, and the Polish horsemen held their sector against the German cavalry's attack. Thrown back across the river, the Germans re-grouped to try again, but the next day the Poles had withdrawn thanks to increasing gains made by the German 12th Infantry Division just to the west.

Display Relevant AFV Rules

AFV Rules Pertaining to this Scenario's Order of Battle
  • Vulnerable to results on the Assault Combat Chart (7.25, 7.63, ACC), and may be attacked by Anti-Tank fire (11.2, DFT). Anti-Tank fire only affects the individual unit fired upon (7.62, 11.0).
  • AFV's are activated by tank leaders (3.2, 3.3, 5.42, 6.8). They may also be activated as part of an initial activating stack, but if activated in this way would need a tank leader in order to carry out combat movement.
  • AFV's do not block Direct Fire (10.1).
  • Full-strength AFV's with "armor efficiency" may make two anti-tank (AT) fire attacks per turn (either in their action segment or during opportunity fire) if they have AT fire values of 0 or more (11.2).
  • Each unit with an AT fire value of 2 or more may fire at targets at a distance of between 100% and 150% of its printed AT range. It does so at half its AT fire value. (11.3)
  • Efficient and non-efficient AFV's may conduct two opportunity fires per turn if using direct fire (7.44, 7.64). Units with both Direct and AT Fire values may use either type of fire in the same turn as their opportunity fire, but not both (7.22, 13.0). Units which can take opportunity fire twice per turn do not have to target the same unit both times (13.0).
  • Demoralized AFV's are not required to flee from units that do not have AT fire values (14.3).
  • Place a Wreck marker when an AFV is eliminated in a bridge or town hex (16.3).
  • AFV's do not benefit from Entrenchments (16.42).
  • AFV's may Dig In (16.2).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Immune to M, M1 and M2 results on Direct and Bombardment Fire Tables. Do not take step losses from Direct or Bombardment Fire. If X or #X result on Fire Table, make M morale check instead (7.25, 7.41, 7.61, BT, DFT).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Provide the +1 modifier on the Assault Table when combined with infantry. (Modifier only applies to Germans in all scenarios; Soviet Guards in scenarios taking place after 1942; Polish, US and Commonwealth in scenarios taking place after 1943.) (ACC)
  • Tank: all are closed-top and provide the +1 Assault bonus, when applicable

Scenario DelP001

Interesting first scenario to The Deluge has Polish Cavalry against their German counter parts, with the Germans making a forced river crossing against the Polish defenders. The Germans have the numbers and artillery support against the superior Polish Cavalry supported by two tankette platoons and a Taczanka. Both sides have four victory conditions that earn them VP’s with the side having the higher difference winning either a minor or major victory.

The Germans sent two engineer platoons supported by a weapons company and two cavalry troops to the town just north of the river were they spotted Polish units guarding the bridge. After concentrated OBA and mortar fire the Polish defenders fled to the woods demoralized, seeing the Polish forces guarding the bridge flee the engineers advanced towards the bridge with the HMG’s close behind.

While this was going on the German Cavalry come onto the board near the east map edge heading south planning on crossing the river to get as many steps across the river as possible (1 VP per step). The plan was to turn west to assist the engineers in securing the bridge, denying the VP to the Pols, but there were no Polish defenders insight, so the cavalry continued heading south with the new goal of capturing the town in the center of map 21 (3 VP per town hex).

Two squadrons of the Polish Cavalry were deployed on the south edge of the woods on map 3 waiting to counterattack any potential breakthrough, once the enemy cavalry was committed they moved out to intercept. Surprisingly this first clash of cavalry went to the Germans who got the better of the Polish forces, with a lot of help from the 3 batteries of 105mm OBA which allowed the Germans to take control of the town. The Polish forces withdrew to regroup while they waited on the Tankettes before they renewed their assault. Once reinforced they attacked again with artillery support from their French 75’s and this time got the better of the German cavalry while retaking most of the town.

This scenario was a close win for the Polish forces, they eliminated 11 more steps then the Germans and controlled 7 town hexes out of 8 but the Germans were able to get 23 steps south of the river, only 2 VP’s separated this battle from a draw.

Scenario DelP001

At first I thought that the Poles had a better shot at keeping this one in the ball park... but the lack of morale told on them very early in the game. The Polish Commander had three options, 1) He could start his defense at the creek. 2) He could start it between the woods and the hill just South of the creek.3) He could "bail" and try to defend both Southern towns and hope for a small win there. He chose option #2 but his fall back position was two moves away. (Perhaps the creek defense would have been better. Next time.) At any rate by the time the Poles got into a position for defense of the towns, he had been reduced to a one town defense and a half-hearted effort on the South West town. It was all over by two hours to go on the clock. Good maneuverable battle scenario.
