Introduction

As the Finns pressed 44th Rifle Division tighter and tighter, Soviet resistance became even more desperate. The ski guerrillas spearheaded the assault as the Finns tried to wipe out the trapped Soviet division. But as their position grew smaller, the Soviets were able to pack more and more men into their shorter front lines.

Conclusion

Expecting an easy victory, the Finns found themselves caught in a furious infantry fight. Narrowing lines allowed the Soviets to pack their front with troops, restoring the fighting spirit of soldiers made fearful by the silent, dark forests. Despite repeated attacks, the Soviet lines held.

Display Relevant AFV Rules

AFV Rules Pertaining to this Scenario's Order of Battle
  • Vulnerable to results on the Assault Combat Chart (7.25, 7.63, ACC), and may be attacked by Anti-Tank fire (11.2, DFT). Anti-Tank fire only affects the individual unit fired upon (7.62, 11.0).
  • AFV's are activated by tank leaders (3.2, 3.3, 5.42, 6.8). They may also be activated as part of an initial activating stack, but if activated in this way would need a tank leader in order to carry out combat movement.
  • AFV's do not block Direct Fire (10.1).
  • Full-strength AFV's with "armor efficiency" may make two anti-tank (AT) fire attacks per turn (either in their action segment or during opportunity fire) if they have AT fire values of 0 or more (11.2).
  • Each unit with an AT fire value of 2 or more may fire at targets at a distance of between 100% and 150% of its printed AT range. It does so at half its AT fire value. (11.3)
  • Efficient and non-efficient AFV's may conduct two opportunity fires per turn if using direct fire (7.44, 7.64). Units with both Direct and AT Fire values may use either type of fire in the same turn as their opportunity fire, but not both (7.22, 13.0). Units which can take opportunity fire twice per turn do not have to target the same unit both times (13.0).
  • Demoralized AFV's are not required to flee from units that do not have AT fire values (14.3).
  • Place a Wreck marker when an AFV is eliminated in a bridge or town hex (16.3).
  • AFV's do not benefit from Entrenchments (16.42).
  • AFV's may Dig In (16.2).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Immune to M, M1 and M2 results on Direct and Bombardment Fire Tables. Do not take step losses from Direct or Bombardment Fire. If X or #X result on Fire Table, make M morale check instead (7.25, 7.41, 7.61, BT, DFT).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Provide the +1 modifier on the Assault Table when combined with infantry. (Modifier only applies to Germans in all scenarios; Soviet Guards in scenarios taking place after 1942; Polish, US and Commonwealth in scenarios taking place after 1943.) (ACC)
  • Tank: all are closed-top and provide the +1 Assault bonus, when applicable

Scenario AFDx009

Ruleset was 3rd Ed., but used spotting rules of 4th (particularly that leaders in assaults may not spot for bombardment fire outside of the assault hex).

Soviet Set-Up:

Board 6: 6xINF + LT (Hero of the Soviet Union) hexes 1009; 1010; 1111. 2xINF; 2xENG + LT 0413 & 0514. 4x81mm 0509 & 0608. 4xINF + 2xHMG + CPT 0209; 0210; 0310.

Board 9: 4xINF + 2xHMG + COL + LT + KOM: 1105; 1106; 1206. 4xINF + 2xINF(R) + CPT: 1114; 1214; 1215. 2xHMG(R) + 2xINF(R) + 2x45mm: 0615; 0716; 0717. 2xT-26: 0809. 2xHMG + LT: 0510. 2x45mm: 0607; 0608. 4xINF(R) + 2xHMG(R) + 45mm: 0702-0704. 6x76.2mm: 0303 & 0304.

5x10 OBA

Finn initial attack group moves west along the southern edge, then moves NW to the road blocking force. It should be noted that the Finn leaders were relatively weak with no '2' morale or attack bonus with the first group. The leaders with the reinforcing elements were very strong including two of the 11-2-2 variety.

Soviet units converge from both west and east. Most notably, the Soviet LT 9-0-1 from the 6:1010 group and other units move aggressively to spot for the massive soviet artillery park (3 x 30 col + 3 x 16 all told). Soviet artillery scores strongly throughout the game with several '2' and/or '12' results on the bombardment table. Further, INF units with Hero of the Soviet Union (see above) rolled '2' and '3' on the 7- and 11-col respectively: overall result is that despite very strong Finnish morale, step losses and morale failures prevent an coherent attack in the board center. One area the Finns were successful was in pushing a CPT + 2 Sissi westwards along the south though these elements too took a step loss and harassing fire.

One particularly exciting action was the Finns assaulting the "Meddlesome" Russian LT (to stop his spotting): after eliminating the Soviet INF with him; the LT survives the casualty checks; morale checks; displacement of lone leader check; and the "free shot." Finding himself now outside the assault, he now calls in multiple artillery shots on the 3xFinnish Sisi units getting a +1 BF shift ... this leads to yet more Finnish step losses.

Finnish reinforcements split with HMGs and some INFs entering along the E/W road clearing remaining soviet units; the remainder move west north of the heavy woods complex to attack the Soviet blocking units and the COL. In the middle of board 6; another 30-col bombardment 2X result kills the Finnish major resulting in a decapitation.

At game end; the Finns: reached the Board 9 N/S road in the south with 4 steps; were engaging dug-in soviet units in the west central portion of Board 6; and had mostly eliminated or DEM the center board holding units.

VPs:

Finn: 30 Soviet steps + 4 leaders + 4 Finnish steps on N/S road = 38 VPs

Soviet: 13 Finnish steps + 34 steps on roads = 47 VPs
