The Russians set up in and around the town with fortified flank guards on either side of the town. The idea being to keep the Germans strung out for a turn or two and to dissipate their strength. That gambit worked for around six turns, then it became an abandonment of the flank guards of the town and the fight was brought into the town itself. The final tally was three hexes for the Germans and two for the Russians, with two under contention. (...and that's how close it was!)
