Introduction

While the Irish military leadership considered invasion a distinct possibility, the civilian government thought their worries greatly overblown. The English had their own invasion scares to overcome, while the Germans certainly would not conduct amphibious landing operations so far to the west. And that was probably right - but the Germans had more options than simply coming by sea.

Conclusion

Operating at the end of a very long and tenuous supply line, the German airborne invaders of Ireland would be outnumbered and on a tight timetable to secure a port through which supplies and reinforcements could flow. The Germans would be unlikely to conquer Ireland, or hold the island if they somehow subdued its major communications and political centers. But they could force the British to intervene against them, possibly sparking a lengthy and deeply unpopular occupation.

Additional Notes

Translated title: "A good run is better than a bad stand".

G2 note: The 5th Brigade was based out of Curragh, in central Ireland. It seems a little far north of where the likely action would be. More likely is a battalion from either the 1st or 3rd Brigade.

Scenario OpGn001

Finally finished this 4-session fight, leading the heroic Irish defenders of the Emerald Isle against foolish German paratroopers falling from the skies. This battle was fought aganst Student's Fallshirmjagers led by the aggressive and resolute Treadasaurus who gave me a heck of a fight in a losing cause. I had far better die rolling luck than my opponent and his sky-high-morale-falling-to-Earth German units. This unbalanced, infantry-only, play-through with the retired Reserve OPFOR Colonel completes the set of 2 mythical scenarios (with unpronounceable titles) in Dr. B.'s Operation Green. This was a win for the lads of the relatively-new, Irish Republic.

By the end of the 18th game turn, we had thrown a combined 21 combat 7-die rolls, and had logged 7 FOW-shortened turns. This scenario was a serious struggle for the brave Irish, given their generally poor morale which led to many disruptions, and frequent demoralizations., making it hard to sequence reinforcement of urban assault hexes. By the end of game turn 11, it looked as though the Germans might prevail, but then their Major ran into a burst of DF machine gun fire causing a major problem in command and control. The parachute horde never really recovered from this consequence. I thank my lucky stars that my opponent had no armor, as the German paras were deadly enough in close assaults and adjacent-hex fire fights, for the first 9 or so turns. Thanks to the combination of the "luck of the Irish," and only losing 3 leaders, the Irish won out in the end, as very heavy German casualties left the bad guys with little to fight with after turn 14.

I give this engaging, but flawed scenario, a solid 3, and note that it was fun to play and full of difficult decisions to make for both sides. If it was better designed, and we were not playing on the maps from Invasion 44, it probably would have rated a higher score, but since we both have red-green color vision issues, this one is not as user friendly as it might be. A win for the Irish this time. I'm not sure that anyone could pull off a win in this lopsided scenario as the German player, so I recommend it for solo play only.
