Introduction

Maj. Gen. Lee Kwon Mu had his North Korean 4th “Seoul” Division fully deployed in the Naktong Bulge and so far it was steadily gaining the upper hand over the American 24th Infantry Division. But his orders did not conceive of a grinding battle of attrition; the 4th Division had to capture the small but important supply port of Masan and so Mu’s men went forward again in a series of intense infantry assaults on the American positions.

Conclusion

The North Korean attack inflicted heavy casualties on the already-depleted American battalions, but despite intense fighting they failed to push them completely off Cloverleaf Hill and thereby break into the flat ground beyond. The North Koreans still had fight left in them, but the 24th Infantry Division battalions were near their breaking point. Walton Walker resolved to end this battle.

Korean War: Counter-Attack, scenario #12: Hanging On

The Battle for Cloverleaf Hill continues in the First Battle of The Naktong Bulge with the Americans 24th Division just barley holding on to the Hill tops but the North Korean’s 4th Division are having another go at knocking the Americans off the high ground. In this scenario the NKPA have two objectives, kill American steps and push American units off the 40 meter hexes north of the river. The American ended up setting up on the larger 40 meter hill north of the river while the North Korean came on the southern map edge in two groups, trying to flank the hill top on both the left and right flanks if possible.

It was bloody struggle especially for the NKPA, they managed to only kill two American steps but demoralized and pushed off the hill enough American steps to leave just 6 undemoralized steps on top of the hill so even with their high casualties, they achieved a Draw at a very heavy price. But I believe if there was one of two more turns, the Americans would have recovered enough demoralized steps to have more than 6 steps on a 40 meter hex. The North Koreans rolled sevens on the dice, so many times, that I hate the number 7 on dice in PG. If I had been more competent in my American setup, I believe they should have won instead tied. But an interesting scenario to play, with the NKPA having twice the forces to attack dug-in American Army units on the hill top!
