Introduction

The coastal advance of the Marine and Army units began in earnest on the 13th. The 8th Marines on the coast and the 2nd Marines on the inland side began the advance at 0530 following all-night harassment of the Japanese by American artillery.

Conclusion

The 2nd Marines advanced initially against little opposition and reached their objective, 1,000 yards west of the start line, in short order. The 8th, on the other hand, encountered strong resistance and was unable to advance as planned, although several companies achieved their objectives. Sustained Navy destroyer fire support was used for the first time and proved beneficial. At the end of the day and during the next two the men of the battered 2nd Marine Regiment were replaced by the 6th Regiment. The last of the original units to land on Guadalcanal back in August, the 2nd Regiment left the island for New Zealand.

Scenario JuFi021

This is very similar to the previous push west scenarios, so the actual terrain is very familiar. The same firing spots on the same trenches, etc. This time around the Japanese are less dense, and the Americans are already shot through however. So much so, that after taking 3 step losses to their Southern regiment their morale drops to 7. This dictates Japanese play, as they concentrate all their bombardment and counterattack ability to the south to trigger the morale reduction, and then cut through the formation with ease for their overall VC.

Americans must clear out basically the whole line aside from a few odd hexes, but they have a ton of firepower to do it.

Both sides roll very well for early OBA and the Japanese key southern entrenchment is reduced from 3 x HMG to 1 HMG, 1 HMG reduced after a couple turns. However Japanese OBA eats up enough steps to trigger the morale reduction and its pretty much over at that point. Japanese counterattacks do slice through as predicted leaving the Americans to push for a draw. But with the increased chances of FoW rolls from the Jungle Figting module rules, combined with all the Jungle activations means they just cant get their formations concentrated and firing and they are unable to clear the Japanese line, although they do take some rather large bites out of it.

Japanese still probably win this most of the time if they try to open up that morale 7 but it was a unique situation aside from Beyond Normandy.
