Introduction

As the advance on Murmansk became over-extended, the Soviets launched a furious series of counter-attacks. On a rocky hilltop dubbed the "Ura Sattel," the Salzburgers faced repeated assaults by the Red Army's veteran 14th Rifle Division. Wave after wave stormed the hillside, and the Austrians fought them back with rocks, bayonets and their bare hands.

After savage fighting, the jägers held their positions. Casualties had been severe, and this offensive had been halted. For decades my grandfather (Mike Bennighof's?) swung between pride and loathing for the medals he won that day.
