Summary

Cuba was initially a Spanish colony. Discontent with Spanish rule eventually led to their war for independence. Cuban rebels, though wary of U.S. involvement, courted U.S. recognition and intervention. The Spanish-American War brought semi-independence as a U.S. protectorate, and formal independence soon after. The Cuban Republic, then under President Fulgencio Batista, was overthrown by the communist revolution, led by Fidel Castro.
