Introduction

As the Finnish II Corps continued its offensive toward the north end of Lake Onega, it ran into the crack 114th Rifle Division. A full-strength unit of the pre-war regular Red Army, recruited around Irkutsk, its tough Siberians had no fear of the Finns and shared their affinity for cold weather and deep forests.

Conclusion

The Siberians fought furiously, and the Finns ground ahead only slowly at a great cost in human life. The 8th Division did manage to push the Soviets back over the Karajalan River, but it would take another two months and heavy casualties to cover the final 10 kilometers to the Maaselkä line.
