| Introduction |
|---|
|
As the 6th Marines pushed forward through rugged ground slightly to the east of Garapan, the regiment’s 3rd Battalion encountered strong resistance from Japanese troops dug in along a ravine. They told their regimental commander, Colonel James P. Riseley, that the Japanese had three field pieces with them. Riseley ordered his men to bypass the obstacle, leaving the 3rd Battalion’s Company B to deal with the Japanese holdouts. |
| Conclusion |
|---|
|
The Japanese had lost all their artillery by this point in the battle; the weapons reported by the Marines were likely battalion support guns. These gave the Japanese little advantage in the dense terrain, where the Marines reduced the Japanese strongpoints one by one, often after short-range exchanges of thrown hand grenades. |

The 8-3 Marine Infantry counter appears in most of the Saipan 1944 and Marianas 1944 scenarios, replacing the 10-3 DF valued Marine counters for those scenarios and is currently published in the most recent Saipan printing. (JayTownsend

Saipan 2nd Edition, scenario #35: East of Garapan In this one, both sides have a smaller force but the Japanese are defending in town hexes. I initially thought the Marines could win this one but after some very bad continuous assault dice rolls, casualties mounted and desperation set in for the Marines to achieve any of their victory objects in 18 turns with this small force. What follow were some more unwise assaults and this one Japanese hex was just too stubborn to be cleared. The Marines lost 6 steps to the Japanese 3 steps and the Japanese 70mm gun section was untouched and never had to fire a shot and most of the town hexes were still in Japanese control, for a major Japanese victory in this scenario. The Americans started out poorly and just didn’t have the forces to overcome their earlier setbacks and continued to engage when they should have pulled back for another day. |
