| Introduction |

|
In the historical campaign, the Japanese did not contest t8eh American landings in Lingayen Gulf, making their stand inland, instead. With an armored division deployed behind the beaches, well-hidden from American aircraft and equipped with more modern tanks, the option of a powerful counterattack would have been on the table. |
| Conclusion |
|---|
|
While the Japanese might be able to overwhelm an American beachhead with an armored attack, it would be a far more difficult thing to do so in the face of American naval gunfire. Even Japan's new almost-good tanks had no defense against 8-inch cruiser shells. |

Pacific Armor, scenario #20: Lingayen Beachhead I put off playing this one for last as I kind of knew the outcome before playing it, as the Japanese don’t have enough infantry units but plenty of armor but the Americans have 4 times the Infantry and even though they don’t match up in armor numbers of the Japanese, they have armor efficiency and can fire twice with all their armor including 12 Sherman tank units and a large off map artillery to top this off. True the Americans have to spread out in their setup to include at least 20 units on each of the 3 beach maps but the key for the Japanese will be map 80 with all those town hexes but needing to keep the American honest, will have to have some of their units enter all three southern maps. The opening rounds turn into large armor battles but after this the Japanese needed Infantry to achieve at least two of the victory objectives but the few they do have get eliminated, so they achieve none of their three objectives and the American get a Major Victory. It was kind of fun to playout the first 12 turns but after that, the fate of this scenario was sealed. I think if AP would have added 20 more Japanese Infantry units it would have been a good scenario but as it stands, I don’t see the Japanese winning this one. |
