Introduction

On the evening of 4 February, Yamashita had ordered the 2nd Tank Division to withdraw into the nearby foothills. The troops defending Lupao didn't receive the initial message, nor the increasingly strident repeats of it over the following days. In the early morning hours of the 7th, The defenders finally attempted to abandon the shattered rubble that marked where Lupao had once stood.

Conclusion

Only eleven tanks could be made to run, and they attacked westward in a tight formation that caught the Americans by surprise. Five of them made it past the American perimeter into the tropical forest beyond, where their crews abandoned them to set out on foot to join the Japanese forces retreating into the mountains. While the Americans chased the tanks, the rest of the garrison slipped away as well. The Japanese had taken terrible casualties, but they had inflicted the desired delay on the American advance.

Additional Notes

All Japanese units are found in Saipan. The Americans will need a truck and ENG from Leyte '44, and a 4.2 inch mortar from either Leyte or Pacific Armor.

Display Relevant AFV Rules

AFV Rules Pertaining to this Scenario's Order of Battle
  • Vulnerable to results on the Assault Combat Chart (7.25, 7.63, ACC), and may be attacked by Anti-Tank fire (11.2, DFT). Anti-Tank fire only affects the individual unit fired upon (7.62, 11.0).
  • AFV's are activated by tank leaders (3.2, 3.3, 5.42, 6.8). They may also be activated as part of an initial activating stack, but if activated in this way would need a tank leader in order to carry out combat movement.
  • AFV's do not block Direct Fire (10.1).
  • Full-strength AFV's with "armor efficiency" may make two anti-tank (AT) fire attacks per turn (either in their action segment or during opportunity fire) if they have AT fire values of 0 or more (11.2).
  • Each unit with an AT fire value of 2 or more may fire at targets at a distance of between 100% and 150% of its printed AT range. It does so at half its AT fire value. (11.3)
  • Efficient and non-efficient AFV's may conduct two opportunity fires per turn if using direct fire (7.44, 7.64). Units with both Direct and AT Fire values may use either type of fire in the same turn as their opportunity fire, but not both (7.22, 13.0). Units which can take opportunity fire twice per turn do not have to target the same unit both times (13.0).
  • Demoralized AFV's are not required to flee from units that do not have AT fire values (14.3).
  • Place a Wreck marker when an AFV is eliminated in a bridge or town hex (16.3).
  • AFV's do not benefit from Entrenchments (16.42).
  • AFV's may Dig In (16.2).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Immune to M, M1 and M2 results on Direct and Bombardment Fire Tables. Do not take step losses from Direct or Bombardment Fire. If X or #X result on Fire Table, make M morale check instead (7.25, 7.41, 7.61, BT, DFT).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Provide the +1 modifier on the Assault Table when combined with infantry. (Modifier only applies to Germans in all scenarios; Soviet Guards in scenarios taking place after 1942; Polish, US and Commonwealth in scenarios taking place after 1943.) (ACC)
  • Tank: all are closed-top and provide the +1 Assault bonus, when applicable

Pacific Armor, scenario #15: Escape from Lupao

This was kind of a surprising scenario, in that it didn’t playout how I thought it would this time around. The Japanese setup in their setup area, while the Americans try to make an encirclement, with the eastern edge a little heavier in units but to do this, they are pretty spread-out. The dice roll for LOS at night resulted in a one hex visibility, a huge benefit for the Japanese.

The Japanese don’t waste time and only leave a few less mobile units back in the entrenchments and hit the Americans thin lines with assaults, so the American then have to readjust their lines and chase Japanese and reinforce assaults and try to close up spaced in their lines. Most of the Japanese armor made it off the eastern edge of the map fulfilling one victory objective of steps exited and the Americans were trying to deny the second one of casualty differential but were behind, as the assaults weren’t going well and the Japanese were mostly avoiding combat to exit but for a couple assault hexes and one entrenchment. Very surprising to me, the Japanese won this casualty differential by on step, thus winning a major victory, not what I thought would happen. Next time, I will bulk up my American defenses into a smaller area and chase the edge rushers.

Side notes:

Of the eleven Japanese tanks that attempted to break through the lines of the American 35th Infantry that night, five made it to the foothills where they were found abandoned and much of the Japanese Infantry also melted away into the foothills east of town. The 35th Infantry secured Lupao that day without much opposition. The 2nd Tank Division lost 33 tanks, 26 truck and 3 75mm guns and equipment around Lupao, as well as 900 men killed, while the 35th Infantry lost 95 men killed and 270 wounded.
