Introduction |
---|
When President Roosevelt ordered the invasion of Martinique, the United States had not yet entered the Second World War. The U.S. Marines had conducted amphibious training, but did not yet possess the ubiquitous ramped “Higgins Boats” used in landings in Europe and the Pacific. The Marines would have to come ashore in ships’ boats provided by the invasion fleet transports and escorting warships. |
Conclusion |
---|
The Marines stormed ashore from their boats, unable to bring any heavy weapons with them. It didn’t matter much; the French had numbers but far less will to fight, and by mid-morning the invaders had secured their beachhead and nearby towns, but many of the French defenders escaped to fight again. |

Atlantic Marines, scenario #1: Beaches of Case-Pilote I remember playing scenario 10 a few years ago and like it, so I wanted return to this supplement and I love playing on the Saipan maps, so I went with scenario one, early Marines against Vichy French and in the jungle. The Marines do have a big task with three objectives to go after and not a very big force but Naval ship fire with a range of 9 hexes inland and critical air-support each turn, while the French have a modest force but low morale but get some entrenchments and minefields to maybe stop the Americans. The French decided to defend with two battlegroups, one forward and one further back. The Americans decided to attack one at a time and get hit with some off map artillery on the approaches and suffer some initial casualties but soon overcome them. After thoroughly destroying the first French battlegroup, the US Marines move inland to battle the second group of French, out of the reach of their Naval ship support but not their air-support. The Marines Engineer unit played a valuable role in this battle, helping clear a minefield and helping get an important modifier in an assault combat. The weaker second group of French was overcome as well but one Demoralized unit seemed to be out of reach to complete all three victory objectives but air support finished off the last step of French units for a Major American victory. The French lost every step, while the Americans lost four steps. A fun, smaller size scenario with an amphibious landing that I feel the French can setup better defensive next time. |
