The old Disrupted/Demoralized bit (again)
I have been playing Demoralized units at half their Morale level (rounded up) for recovery purposes. At least that is what my opponent(s) play it as. That has never seemed correct to me, but I can find no references one way or the other in the rules. My interpretation would be a reduced morale by one AND a reduced recovery number at a minus one also. (This IIW rules page 30, under the Displacement/Demoralization segments)

Whaddya think?

Basically, I think you have it correct. A couple things confuse me though. I don't know what the IIW rules are. The other thing is are you compounding the morale reduction and rally penalty?

As I understand it, a demoralized unit (normal morale of 8) has a morale of 7, while demoralized. With its morale of 7, it need to have a net roll of 6 or less to rally. Are you imposing another -1 penalty to it when rallying?

Not sure where the half morale thing comes from. That would make recovery almost impossible.

Demoralized units have their morale reduced by one as ployd says above.

One subtle thing about morale in the game is that when you take a morale check in combat you need to roll equal to or less than your morale, but for recovery you must roll less than your current morale.

I have never played the morale rules for demoralization it the way that gunny describes. Don't know anyone else in shared play that does.

The rules look to be as specific as Peter and Joe both indicate for both combat results and morale recovery.

RE: The old Disrupted/Demoralized bit (again)
My opponent said that the reduced morale rate was halved for demoralized units. (I had thought he was confusing this with the admonition that all combat strengths were halved. Which would come into discussion IF the Morale factor could be construed as a "combat strength".) This, indeed, made recovery most difficult. (We did go round and round about it....) But, for the sake of play, I let it go. It is nice to know that I can go on from here with a merely reduced rate for demoralized units. ....and that's the way it shall be!

For Demoralized units the correct consideration is a reduction of one for basic morale as well as for recovery.

Pete, I see what you are talking about. Example: The "normal", given, Morale factors for a scenario are 8/6. The first figure is for Morale Checks and the Second is for Recovery. In the case of a demoralized unit, however, that set of figures is adjusted to 7/5 as long as the unit is demoralized. This should be the correct reading, yes? (.....and it will solve a long-standing conundrum!)

Uh, no... Going to your example, morale factors for a scenario are 8/6. 8 is morale for a full strength unit, 6 is the morale for a reduced unit (a 2-step unit that has taken a step loss). For recovery, the unit attempting to rally must roll less than its morale number after modifiers are applied. Thus, if our example unit is full strength and disrupted, it must roll a 7 or less, after modifiers are applied, to return to good order. If it were reduced, it would need to roll less than 6, effectively a 5 or less after modifiers.

A unit's morale is reduced by 1 while demoralized. Thus our example unit, at full strength, now has a morale of 7 and would need to roll a modified 6 or less to rally. If reduced, its morale would be 5 while demoralized, thus requiring a modified roll of 4 or less to recover.

I have NEVER gotten that straight. I keep changing the particulars of the rules and it totally confuses me.... every time I  think I have it... I get it wrong again. (It happens when you are 80+.) That is exactly why I try to get a SET rule system into my head. That way there is no question... ever. (Sigh....) I guess it is never going to be that way.
