can a good order leader in an assault hex activate and try to recover an adjacent demoralized unit?
No, he can only affect units in adjacent hexes to bring them into the assault hex.

Nick,

I know Matt answered but I always think it best to also direct a question to the rule so they can see it for themselves. Its rule 12.51 in 3rd ed.

12.51 Leaders

Only leaders in an assault hex may influence units there. Leaders in adjacent hexes may not. Leaders in the assault hex may direct units in adjacent hexes to enter the assault hex, but may not influence them in any other way if they don't enter the assault hex.
Thanks Vince!
I interpret this rule to mean that a morale check in an assault hex can not be modified by a leader in an adjacent hex but haven't found anything yet to confirm this other than this rule. Hope I'm right!

Correct.
