Well "stink eye" me Shad boy, Still I will bow down to the majority view.

However my reading on the subject matter was that these poor bastards in the Penal units did not race towards enemy lines shouting "Hurrah" but had to be goaded and pushed along by accompanying NKVD or regular troops. In this scenario I an trying to co-ordinate the attack by using them to adsorb OF fire and move INF/HMG units behind them. Its called tactics.

For whatever reason, as I read your post the narrative voice in my head skewed more and more towards Cleese in Confuse-a-Cat...

You forgot to mention you didn't want them falling under your own pre-plotted bombardments !
Vince, it sounds like the mines are historically accurate.

Wayne, sorry on this one, and I see you point about these guys not wanting to go, but this is not just trying to shuffle these guys from one area to another. As Shad said they had officers ready to shoot these guys if they did not move forward. So, although they were not highly motivated, there was someone behind them that was.

I was thinking more like this:
That guy has a good dentist! Look at those pearly whites!
Good looking chap though, like his commander. I also think you guys have been watching far too many films.
