Played Arbuthnot's Folly

Twice.

Black Prince, Duke of Edinburgh, Defence, and Warrior. All ACs. Versus five German CLs with 30(!!!) DDs. Setup is point blank range and the KM ships are all faster so there’s no escape.

Played without referred pain so a hit on something that’s not there is just a miss. This makes DDs sooooo hard to hit. The CLs did their worst to the RN, but to not much avail. The RN messed up three of the CLs, two with torpedo mount hits but the real threat was the DDs.

They came in two waves and dispatched two of the ACs in one wave and the other two in the second wave. Last one down was Defence which took 6 torpedoes! 12 hull hits but she only started with five boxes so that was an instant sink.

Lost two S49 boats but that’s off light, along with the CL damage but none of them were badly damaged.
Fun scenario and all the cool changes in the mod. All damage recorded on the counters not a glance at the SDS. Played smooth and fast.

The Jutland mod is going slow. We’re really throwing a lot into this one. You’ll want to give this a try. Oh. And we have a North Sea 1914 and Dogger Bank 1915 extension ready to go as well (same additional ships for the most part with two sets of scenarios).

After Action Report for GWAS Jutland 2e - Dogger Bank 1915 - Off Helgoland Island.

This is a nifty little scenario. It's the first one I've done in Jutland second edition. As part of the Cuxhaven As part of the Cuxhaven Road in December 1914, the British had a number of plans to deter Germans during various phases of the operation. Tyrwhitt of the Harwich force Took his cruisers and destroyers to sea to block any German ships from leaving Helgoland to attack the British carrier force. The GWAS scenario pits four German light cruisers and 5 destroyers against three British light cruisers and four tribal class destroyers.
It looks like an even match, but the British, have armored hulls and the Germans do not, so given that all the German guns are tertiary, they're not going to sink the British light cruisers with gunfire but the British CAN sink the German light cruisers with gunfire. All the British can do, is wipe all the guns off British ships as they have a 2:1 edge in guns It's a challenge but possible.

I played this out twice and the first time I did not notice that the British had light armor so I allowed the German guns to penetrate and it was a romp for the Germans.

But... I replayed with all the nasty rules and the Germans lost no ships, but had been beaten quite soundly while having sunk one British cruiser, the Aurora with torpedoes from the V Class DDs in a knife fight in the same hex with all the fish running and all the guns blazing.

So the Germans and the British came at one another full speed. Tyrwhitt charging in for the RN and the Germans intent on getting in contact or past the cruiser force.

In the third movement phase the forces came into contact becoming adjacent which removed the very slight advantage of the British for their secondary guns. Were using all the cool features in the module so we annotated and apportioned all our fire for both sides, so that we know who were shooting at.

The Germans decided since they had a preponderance of guns to target the Arethusa, with the leader Tyrwhitt, with all the guns, which means that the second, third and fourth ship had to roll for confirmation on hits. Graudenz fired first and hit one primary hit which devolved to a secondary and took out half the Arethusa's guns on the first shot. The remainder of the CLs fired and got 4 hits from the nine factors, but the confirmation rolls 2 failed. Bad luck for the Boche.

The Germans got one primary and one tertiary hit, wiping the last gun from Arethusa but not doing any hull damage because the third gunnery hit, which should have devolved into a hull hit could not penetrate. Still this phase saw the disarming of Arethusa, thus one third of the British cruiser power. Arethusa fired in return at Graudenz and knocked out two of the three tertiaries so it was an exchange which slightly favors the Germans. Aurora fired at Stralsund knocking out two guns, Undaunted fired at Rostock and knocked out the hull mount for the torpedoes... Oh no... lost a hull mount torpedo. Ouch... (not really)

The Tribals attacked Kolberg and and knocked out one tertiary for their trouble.

Both sides held their torpedo fire in Phase 13. Torpedoes are OK at 1 hex, but in the same hex they get a +1 and both sides wanted that for the next torpedo phase.
Jutland 2e Vassal module available soon

Because phases 14 and 15 are move for any OTHER speed than 2.
In February 1904 a Russians cruiser force sallied forth from Vladivostok to raid the Japanese. In real life they went west to the Tsugaru Strait to access the shipping on the Japanese East Coast. In this scenario the Russians took a right hand turn instead and accessed the Yellow Sea through the Tushima Straits and found an inolated Japanese cruiser force doing mean things to a Russian gunboat, the Mandjour. Time to take action! Insert some Russian Jingoist statement here.

The Russians caught the Japanese force (my force) of three cruisers a few miles off the Chinese Coast and moved directly in to dispatch them. The Protected Cruiser Bogatyr, and Armored Cruisers Rurik, Rossia, and Goromboi readied their guns and commenced firing at their maximm range doing no damage in the first gunnery round. Russian guns have to confirm every hit and although one got a 6 the confirmation roll was a miss. The Japanese return fire, while light compared to the Russian guns, has no confirmation rolls so will get hits more regularly.

My opponent and I had played once earlier and switched sides so we knew enough not to close to torpedo range, zero hexes per the specisl rules, the Russians hovered at maximum range for their secondaries and the Japanese manouvered to do the same. The Russian gunnery though was actually acceptable and the heaiver weight of fire started to take its toll leaving one japanese Cruiser, Suma, with a speed loss after losing one hull box. Rossia then took one hull hit which was not enough to slow it down. The Russian Flagship, Rurik then took a fairly severe 2 hull hit with a speed loss, but the other two cruisers were untouched. The Idzumi then took a secondary hit putting here out with no guns. The Japanese return fire was jusst too light and they only scored a hit on Rurik taking one of her four hull boxes. Barely enough to slow her. But the next round was enough when the Russian player, my opponent, got a catastrophic hull hit on the Akitsushima and down she went. One ship with a very reduced speed to 1s, the other with no guns, the Japanese decided to strike their colors and stop the useless effusion of blood.

Not every battle was going to go Japan's way it seems and their war was off to a bad start.
The Vladivostock Raid - Operational Scenario 2
It is long but covers a LOT of the operational game and if you haven't tackled an Operational Scenario, this is a good place to start. I cut ahead as much as I could but I still think this is a prime candidate to speed up to 1.25x speed. You can pause it if you need to or set it back to 1.o for the juicy bits.

This is just the second edition rulebook and the completely rewritten scenarios. The counters in the maps are the same for first and second edition, I believe.

This is a special deal from APL and then expires on Wednesday.

He may not want a coppa Jutland but if you do have one, you might wanna think about upgrading and saving some bucks. Not a lot of bucks, admittedly, for some bucks.

We have four now and we are releasing one more, Eastern Fleet, tonight for five modules total at the moment. We are working on two more.

I think this is more VASSAL modules for the APL sea games than any one person or team has ever tried to do. They are all have a mostly standard UI and have some nifty features to make your game play better. In the Autumn, we are going to do dot releases on each module to get them up to the standards of the latest releases. Since we add features and fixes as we develp, we need to roll those changes back into each module.

I would like to get to the point where we can get modules out at or near the release dates for the APL products.

I say "we" because we are now a small development team with a couple of us working on modules and a couple working on some new technology that we can use to really improve the online experience. But we are looking for at least one more person that wants to learn how these modules are built and who wants to start building them with us.

Our mission is to deliver quality vassal modules and for the team to become independent of any one of us in the event that one of us becomes unable to continue for any reason. Ideally this should be ongoing as long as APL is publishing and hopefully we get around to as many of the games as we can.

As long as Dr. Bennighof is happy with the results and the distribution, we intend to continue doing modules.
As for you guys, come on and download the modules for which you own the games and I will play each of you and beat you with one battlecruiser tied behind my back.

Make my day.
