On the Tank/Inf co-ord question

On the Tank/Inf co-ord question
Let me see now, the rules clearly indicate that a leader, in a stack, can activate a tank unit (or two) within his hex. If he has a battle modifier of (say) 1, and there happens to be a tank in THAT hex along with a Leader, does the tank in the second hex fire (their machine guns, anyway) also? Given the level of tank/inf coordination near the end of the war, it would seem logical to allow.

Then, a battle modifier of two should be able to control two adjacent stacks, each with their own tanks in the stacks. Then, it comes to follow that movement activation should be allowed, subject to the limitations of the rules for Infantry Leaders, including subordinate activation...... just as long as there is an Infantry Leader in each hex.... ????

I'll let you scratch your head(s) on that one, as I have.

Um... no. Regular leaders cannot activate tanks, rule 3.33. The leader and the tank may activate at the same time, because they are in the same hex, but the leader cannot activate the tanks.

Perfectly logical, if you ignore the specific rule that he cannot activate the tanks.

OK, following up on that reading of the rules...... the Leader can activate (his) stack, but the tank(s) cannot fire as part of that hexes' firepower???? If the tanks are activated (in that stack) are not the tanks in the next hex capable of being activated along with the Tank Leader in the original hex???? Or do the tanks fire their MGs as a unit.... but not part of the Infantry firing.

Now I am really perplexed.

RE: On the Tank/Inf co-ord question
.... further (in your quoted, 3.33) it clearly says that "Any AFV's and Tank Leaders stacked in the regular leader's hex can activate simultaneously with him (the regular leader) if the stack self-activates."

If the Tank Leader activates, and the six hexes around that hex (full of tanks, of course) can also activate.... then they can fire together (MGs only), yes??

The question remains if they can fire as part and parcel of the original stack. (....and, as you pointed out) as part of a "battle enhanced" stacks????

You are missing the point. The leader does not activate the tanks. The tanks and leader (and anyone else) can activate together because they are in the same hex. The leader is not activating the tank.

RE: On the Tank/Inf co-ord question
The only point I am trying to ascertain is if I can fire my tank machine guns with the rest of the infantry as part of the whole stack or separately, and how can I jointly fire them with another stack (with tanks).

Just lookin' to enhance my firepower, dat's all.

That you can do, if they they are in the same hex. If in different hexes, it get complicated.

....unless, of course you can't.... which is a far departure from realism. (IMHO!)

RE: On the Tank/Inf co-ord question
This question comes up every few years, I've answered it a couple of times myself. The last time I think was with Felipe 2 or 3 years ago.

In the first hes, you need a regular leader, with a combat modifier, a unit with direct fire strength that the regular leader can activate, and a tank leader. In the second (adjacent) hex, you need the second tank and a unit with direct fire strength that the regular leader can activate. The first hex activates, which activates the regular leader and the tank leader. (Pro tip: have the regular leader activate the INF/HMG if present so he can add his point to their firepower.) Have the regular leader activate the unit in the adjacent hex to fire, and the tank leader activates the adjacent tank to fire.

Since units of any type which are stacked together may always combine the same type of fire (direct or bombardment), the first hex combines their fire power, as does the adjacent hex. The combat modifier of the regular leader allows him to combine the fire power of an adjacent hex with his. Thus the combined adjacent tank's firepower, which has been combined with the other unit in that hex, may be combined with the firepower of the units in the first hex.
