Rules.... once again into the breach....
I keep seeing the issue of "we need a new rulebook" coming up, time and again.... but there is very little serious discussion on the matter.... just hand ringing. Here's my "take" on the matter;
1. THE COST! As we know (or surmise), AP is running with a very thin margin and can ill afford to publish a new rule book. (At least that is the impression we are given... as to the veracity of the averment..... ???) Unless they charge for it!
2. Given a new rule book.... many of us STILL wouldn't be satisfied and would once again race off into the realm of "house rules", if for no other reason than to differentiate ourselves from the rank and file players.... you know, those poor souls who have a bad enough time memorizing the "set" rules as against memorizing all the "error, omission and let's do it my way" rules in addition.
3. The rules of a game are to be exactly that. Any differentiation from the rules becomes PG2.0, or PG2.0a, ad infinatum. Therefore, the end result becoming small, discrete "sects" of PG players that play one way to the disdain of all other "players" not in my (obviously superior) "sect". I think this defeats the purpose of the game, (i.e. to have a common set of rules that everyone can play, with a minimum of mental dissatisfaction.)
So, while I can see the need of a new rulebook, I seriously doubt that it will be the panacea we seem to think it will be.
But, then again, that's just me.
