On-board arty/mort fire - Grognard Gunny - 04-11-2026

It says that off board Arty can only fire three units at a hex. Can on board Arty/Mort fire more than three, with an appropriate leader? (You would think by now I would have run across that particular situation before..... But NO!)

Yes. Onboard artillery activate just like any other units. So with the right setup of leaders and adjacent units you could activate many of them at once.

Like Joe says, any number of on board artillery or mortars may be activated together. Any number may be combined to fire on a target hex, subject to the limit of a leader's ability to combine fire from different hexes. Keep in mind that a leader's combat modifier may only be used to combine fire in this case, not for enhancement.

That's what I thought, just couldn't find a reference for it in the "rules". Have been playing it that way anyway. Thanks for the verification.

One of my greatest failings is that I tend to forget to assign a leader with a "combining" factor to the mortars/arty... particularly since they usually don't come on board at the same time. It does change the particulars of the scenario if one can "drop", say, 48 SP on a hex rather than 24, yes?

That's what those 8-1-0 and 7-1-0 lieutenants are for. Or that smart colonel who you don't want on the front line.
