Hi,

do sand dunes block Line of Sight? The general rule seems to be:

Quote:8.31 Blocking LOS.
LOS is blocked if it passes through a hex that contains limiting terrain (see 8.2, the TEC, and scenario special rules)

but the (Sword of Israel) TEC specifies which limiting terrain actually blocks LOS (e.g., mangrove, 2 hexes of orchard, hills if lower elevation etc.). Funnily enough, dunes are only limiting terrain, it doesn't say that they block LOS. 4th edition TEC explicitly says they do, but the general 4th edition rule is that Limiting Terrain does not always block LOS.

So which is which? Is 8.31 the general rule and dunes (or any other limiting terrain unless the TEC explicitly says it doesn't) block LOS, or is the TEC that spells out which limiting terrain also blocks LOS?

I know, it's rather poorly written. Firstly, special rules. including terrain rules, from the game's special rules override the series rules. So, with any contradiction, the game rule wins.

Generally speaking, any limiting terrain with height blocks LOS. You might want to download and use the PG 4th edition terrain rules. They cover PG Modern terrain and are a little clearer.

Sometimes you just have to overcome the poorly written rules of PG, with that said on the TEC for Modern, it describes Sand Dunes as "Rolling Hills of loose sand." I played it as a hill, block LOS. As one who has experienced sand dunes at home and abroad, they tend to block LOS especially if you are in the trough. As Peter mentioned the current PG TEC lists Sand Dunes as Blocking Terrain.
