I'm setting up Eastern Front 104 and there is no mention in the scenario book of when dawn or dusk is.  There is no default in the rules, but the turn record chart does give dawn at 0600.  Is that what one is supposed to default to when the scenario book does not give the dawn nor dusk times?
In 3rd edition and earlier, the turn chart's markings was the default but the rules didn't say anything. 4th edition added Section 8.11 to make this explicit.

Here is 8.11, it does not say when dawn or dusk is when the scenario specific rules don't say when dawn or dusk is:

8.11 From Dusk to DawnThe transition from night to day or vice versa presents a time of changing spotting range. Scenario specific rules will identify the time Day or Night occurs. Use the following spotting ranges in relation to those times.
  • Dawn minus 60 minutes: spotting range 1 or 2 hexes (see below), night rules in effect.
  • Dawn minus 45 minutes: spotting range 2 hexes, night rules in effect.
  • Dawn minus 30 minutes: spotting range 4 hexes, no night rules.
  • Dawn minus 15 minutes: spotting range 8 hexes, no night rules.
  • Day: spotting range 12 hexes.
  • Dusk minus 60 minutes: spotting range 12 hexes.
  • Dusk minus 45 minutes: spotting range 8 hexes, no night rules.
  • Dusk minus 30 minutes: spotting range 4 hexes, no night rules.
  • Dusk minus 15 minutes: spotting range 2 hexes, night rules in effect.
  • Night: spotting range 1 or 2 hexes (see below), night rules in effect.
This scenario, South of Kharkiv, was also in the original Panzergrenadier.  In the scenario it says "First Turn: 0500 Day."  The scenario in East Front merely says, "First Turn: 0500."  Neither scenario book gives the time for Dusk/Dawn so I assume that such are a 4th Edition thing and will go with "Day" for the play of the scenario.
Changed my mind after thinking about it during set up and reading AARs where one of them mentions approaching under darkness and the sky lighting up..  I'm going with 4th Editon 8.11 and setting dawn at 0600 as the time chart says.  I think this makes for a more interesting scenario.  And I'm playing solo, so what the hey.

Factually right, or wrong; scenarios were either "Day" or "Night" or included a specific instruction to the contrary back then. Eastern Front Deluxe was actually a 2nd edition module if you consider the rules first published with it as its "home" ruleset, although 3rd wasn't too far behind it's release. Things were less chromey in those times.

You could google the sunrise time for that area on that date and round to the nearest 15 minutes.
Thought 0500 was AM and 1700 (5pm) evening on the Turn Record Chart or am I being too simplistic.  4th Edition turn record chart c2014.
I was using the Turn Track in VASSAL which is a copy of the most recent published one.  It has Dawn at 0600 and Dusk at 1800.
When unspecified, dawn and dusk are 0600 and 1800, respectively. That, or it is a day scenario as sunrise was 0345, game time.
