Full Version: Continued defensive post assaults?

Here's one I ran across: The enemy has been defeated in an assault, has decided to call it a day, backs off his one hex and has been marked with a Fired/Moved marker. So far, so good.

However, this enemy group is again assaulted by another group of friendlies who are not marked with a Moved/Fired marker, as well it should be. (Not against the rules AND makes sense!).

The question comes in as to whether or not that enemy stack can counterassault even though it has been marked with a Moved/Fired marker already.

Reality says it should be able to..... but at a cost (I would think).

Is this a situation where the Moved/Fired marker is ignored? (For sake of simplicity in the ruleset.) Or is it case where a +1 should be added to the list of modifiers under the guise that suffering ANOTHER assault would cause some degree of discomfort to the receivers.

Whaddya think?

Rule 12.2 Required Combat seems to be the answer to that question. There are no restrictions on defensive fire, so it appears that your troops routed out of the frying pan and into the fire. Stuff happens in each 15 minute turn.

You can always defend against an assault. If the units who retreated want to launch their own assault against the new guys in their hex they'll have to wait until next turn since you can only do one activation per turn.
Next question: Should there be a penalty on that defending unit? (But that would require a "rule"!)

Maybe not (for simplicity's sake).

No penalty, but make sure to watch the language on the assault CRT. Assaulting units are the active ones, Defending one are the inactive and Side applies to both. For example the "higher moral" bonus only applies for the side attacking meaning they get it when active, but not if they are inactive (defending).
Yeah, I tend to get "involved" with the action and want to forget that the defender is now the attacker and vice versa. THEN you have to refigure who gets what advantages on the "Column Shift", etc. Tends to make for a rather convoluted Assault sequence...... BUT makes sence in the long run, so I can't fault it.
