It seems I live I an area thaT doesn't have too many strategy board game players. Is there a player base near the East side of Michigan, a list or what? 

Have you checked the Player Finder? There are 5 members in Michigan, with another 9 in Ohio and 5 more in Indiana. There are also 5 more in Ontario Canada, at least 2 in the Toronto area.
