I've been seeing assaults a lot in my recent games.  Way more, at least, than my older games.  I think it's a reflection of objectives changing from the more firepower heavy battles of RtB.

Kursk:  Lots of Time has Priority missions here, with reinforcements being a major concern.  Normally, the defender will hold on to the few town or hill hexes he can get.  Soviet AT Rifle special rule is a must.  It comes down to whether you are willing to take the casualties now or risk being swept away later on.

Elsenborn Ridge:  Well it's a lot of close range fighting after all.

Infantry Attacks August 1914:  Here assault is much different and much more decisive.  Trying to extricate yourself from a fight with cavalry usually means that you'll just get run down in pursuit.  A perfect example of design simplicity leading to a great function!
Assault is a distant echo of the grand father of this system Panzerblitz/Panzer Leader Close Assault Tactics. Most infantry combat happened at ranges less than the hex scale.
