I'm guessing that it's a village if it's a single hex and a town if it's multi-hex, but I can't find this expressly stated anywhere. Would someone please point out a source for this? Thanks!

Towns have mayors and villages don't. (What? No mayoral rule?)

By map graphics, a town has buildings when the graphics are oblique, or square/rectangular roofs or shapes when looking top-down. Villages have huts when looking obliquely or small round roof when looking top-down. Apart from that, special rules in the game or scenario will define the villages.
