LOS on map sheet 35 (Jungle)
Questions on LOS and spotting on map sheet 35 which is mostly jungle terrain.
This will be a condition followed with my response.

A leader/unit is in hex 0709, 40-meter contour in jungle terrain.

A. They have LOS and can spot into the six hexes surrounding them  -  yes.
B. Can spot and has LOS into the 20-meter hexes 0507, 0508, 0509, 0510.  -  yes.
C. Can't spot or spot into hexes 0407, 0410 due to limiting terrain hex blocking LOS.  - yes.

A leader/unit is in hex 0705, 40-meter contour in jungle terrain.
D. Can spot and has LOS into the village hexes 0504, 0505  -  yes.

A leader/unit is in hex 0805.
E. Can spot and has LOS into hex 0507  -  yes.
F. Can spot and has LOS into all of the village hexes  - yes.

Am I correct?
Thanks for any explanations - cheers.  Big Grin

It looks good to me, although I can see where you would get some flack over the hexes in question, "more than one jungle hex". But.... the hexes in question all "look over" the intervening hexes, therefore are good!

On second "look", the "sight line" 0805 to 0504 could be construed to be blocked because of the Village hex 0604 and the sight line 0705 to 0504 could be the same. THAT would take some interpretation.

.... although I'd be inclined to allow both instances.

Going on (as I usually do when I have a problem with the rules): In the booklet that came with the "Kokoda Trail" set of scenarios, it states:
(On page three of the special rules.) "Spotting: Blocks LOS per 8.3 (ie. general rules, 4th ed.). Jungle hexes are limiting terrain per 8.2, except that units occupying a Jungle hex cannot be spotted by enemy units more than one hex away." THIS would seem to negate your spotting of troops in a jungle hex, even if you can see over the intervening terrain. Your choice, I guess. (Now I would even begin to doubt the above.) (Unless you play online!)

One of the reasons why I decided NOT to play online is the hairsplitting of the rules one can encounter whilst playing. At least when I come across an instance where the rules are a bit "squirrely". Most of the time I go with common sense in my solutions, but........ I'd rather play than argue over a reading of the rules.

So true, although many of us playing online in shared mode are not persnickety, rules lawyers.

Then again, the beer does help . . . Winking

So very true GG. I will tell you though that I have found many more people here who are not rules lawyers than I have found people who are. My rule is to both make your interpretation and if you can't make a decision, roll a dice, shut up, and play on. It is just not fun to play someone that is a lawyer about the rules.
