Use of Star shells on column shift - dirk - 05-29-2015

Does the use of a star shell, for spotting, negate the -1 column modifier on the 4th ed. Direct Fire or Bombardment tables?
Here the column modifier ( -1 Target hex is fired on when spotting range 1 or 2 due to night or weather. )

I would say yes since the purpose of the star shell was to provide an artificial sunlight specifically for use in darkness.

"Units within the primary lighted area (within two hexes of the target hex as shown) are spotted using normal spotting rules rather than night spotting rules,..." I take that to ignore the 1 or 2 hex night visibility rules so I believe it is a yes. It also can make it difficult on the spotter who has to be within that 1 or 2 hexes to call that fire mission with the star shell, as he is as clearly seen as the target. Good for using that odd low value leader as an FO.

Thank you for replies, I will not use the column modifier after using a star shell.
