How do I know what is a town or a village, especially when playing pre-4th Edition scenarios with the 4th Edition rules?
I'm playing Invasion of Germany and I guess I shall assume they are all towns, correct?
Yes. Villages are usually established by game or scenario special rules.

Not in the main rules. Look in the front of the scenario book. If it doesn't say so there, it will be an individual scenario rule.
Another win for this system and its group. With so many other games out there, this could have dragged on for weeks with several different interpretations.

So then the default is towns. If nothing is said in the front of the scenario book or in the scenario special rules then they are towns.
That is my understanding.
I think Villages are only in some of the PTO games.
They turn up in Little Saturn, Conquest of Ethiopia (btw: not in the game special rules), the Korean Ware games (sort of like PTO).
