Want a chance to see what opportunity fire does to a mass of infantry advancing across an open field? This is the one for you (hint: it ain't pretty). The question is whether enough of the horde can advance to close action to silence the fire and permit a lodgement in the evocatively named Worker's Settlement No. 6. In this case the answer was a resounding "no". Working your troops through the woods south of town gives some cover but eventually they will have to brave the fire of the German fortified location and it gets ugly from that point on. Some small Soviet forces actually did get into the town but could not dislodge the Germans who, at that point had ample reserves and were able to outlast the Soviets in an urban slugging match. Some NKVD forces tried to bypass the town and advance beyond but were easily handled by German reserves in the woods to the east of the town. If you need another reminder for your troops to wait until your artillery has softened up a location before advancing try moving into range on the town without getting even a disruption on the defenders. It will permit you to drastically reduce your command issues by removing several platoons from the Soviet OOB.
